Rich in research

Technical University Munich. With its faculties in chemistry, computer science, mechanical engineering, mathematics and physics, the Garching Campus is clearly focused on technology and the natural sciences. Additional facilities such as the new research reactor FRM-II (a modern source of neutrons), the research reactor Munich (FRM-I or "Atom Egg"), the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratory with its research focus on nuclear and particle physics, and the Central Institute for Medical Technology (Zentralinstitut für Medizintechnik) make Garching a melting pot of innovative work.
The Ludwig Maximilian University Munich has a focus on experimental physics (atomic physics, laser physics, high-energy physics and nuclear physics). In addition, it operates the branch office for neutron diffraction, in the department of crystallography of the Faculty for Geosciences.
The Max Planck Institutes für Astrophysics, for Extraterrestral Physics, for Plasma Physics and for Quantum Optics are located at the research park in Garching.
The GSF - National Research Center for Environment and Health develops scientific concepts for the protection of human health and the natural basis of life for now and the future.
In applied research projects at the Walther Meissner Institute, special methods and processees for low temperature research, cryogenics, novel components for superconducting electronics, magnetoelectronics und quantum information processing as well as nanostructuring technologies are developed.
